Lost Keys

Having lost keys is always a stressful experience, whether misplaced or stolen. The most common situation is that you will lose your entire bunch of keys, rather than just one individual key. So, it is not only your house key that will be lost, your car key, garage key or keys to your office or workplace may also be included on the same bunch.

Report Lost Keys  to the Police.

First thing you need to do when you discover you have lost your keys, is to inform your local police authority and give a description of your lost keys, including any notable features such as a keyring. This will help you get your keys back if they are found and handed in.

Let Others who Might be Affected Know

Did you have any spare keys from family members or friends? If you had a key/keys for anyone else’s home or property it is always wise to notify them that your key ring has been lost or stolen. This allows them to secure their properties accordingly and doesn’t risk their security.

Check for Lost Key Cover with your Insurance

Some insurance policies, both home and vehicle, offer protection for lost keys or theft. This could be paying for the replacement of the lock or to replace the keys. It’s always worth contacting your insurance policy to see if they will help to cover the replacement costs for a lost  key but be cautions to understand what it might mean for your no claims.

Lost Car Keys

Losing or having your car keys stolen can be a really stressful experience. You may worry that it’s going to be very expensive to replace your keys. There are different ways to resolve the missing car key issues. But first things first, if you suspect they have been stolen, then you need to inform the police. Then you can go about having them replaced. You could buy a new set of keys from the dealer, but that’s going to be the most expensive option. We would recommend calling an auto locksmith, if you’ve lost your keys. Auto locksmiths can replace lost car keys for most makes and models and should be able to do it at the roadside. An auto locksmith will also be able to reprogram your vehicle so the lost car keys can’t be used to gain access to the car again. You could also check with your insurance policy to see if you have ‘key cover’ which some car insurance companies cover as standard. You could also call a break down service, however you will need to check if they can replace lost car keys at the roadside.

Lost Keys

We always recommend changing your locks if a key is lost. Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee who might have your keys and what intentions they might have, with a big factor being that if someone uses a key to gain entry to your property it can invalidate your insurance policy.

For your personal and home security, we always recommend changing your locks if you lose your keys. To better understand pricing, look at Locksmith Pricing 2021, Understanding Lock Prices and The Best Locks Money can Buy.

Whenever you change your locks, for whatever reason, you should always tell your insurance provider. Within an insurance policy there will be a minimum set of security requirements that are needed to keep a policy valid, this can include a security requirement for your lock type. By not meeting the requirements, it can invalidate any insurance policies you have.
