When should I change my locks?
There are a few scenarios which we recommend you change your locks, for security purposes:
- If you have been burgled
- If you have moved to a new house
- If you lose your keys, or suspect they have been stolen
- If your lock is broken, unreliable or generally not operating
- You are unsure of how many people might have a key to your property
- If you are a landlord and have changed tenants
How much does it cost to have the locks changed?
The cost of getting your locked changed will vary depending on factors such as: door type, type of lock and type of job, however when you call a Locksmith, they should be clear about their costs upfront. The most accurate way to understand Locksmith prices is to call for a quote on 01202 013577 but for a better estimated guide head over to our Locksmith Prices Page.
How long does it take to change a lock on a door?
On average changing one lock takes around 30 minutes, but this time may change depending on the type of door, make of lock, condition of your door and other variables. A reputable Locksmith will discuss how long they think the job should take before starting any work. Any work done by an NGCL Locksmith will be completed to the highest standard.
Should I change my locks after buying a house?
You should always change your locks after you move into a new house, preferably as soon as you move in. We recommend this as when you move into a new home you don’t know who may have a key to your property, whether this be though the odd spare key, previous lost keys or if any keys have ever been stolen. This comprises the security of your new home, as you don’t know who might have access to your property and unfortunately if someone was to gain access to your house with a key it could invalidate your home insurance.
The best course of action is to pre-book with a Locksmith to arrive at your home once you have moved in to change your locks to ensure the security of your property, you can also take this opportunity to ensure that your locks are up to British Standard.
What is British Standard?
A British standard is the minimum manufacturing standards that a product must meet before being recognised as a security product by the relevant authorities and are often required on external wooden domestic doors for most insurance policies. The British Standard kitemark, is widely regarded as a sign of product quality and can be clearly identified on the inner lock.
